Motorsports: Scarbrough wins Modified 50-lap feature at Langley
Provided by Langley's Gary Daughtrey:
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA Auto Industry Night Race Recap Saturday, July 31, 2010 HAMPTON (July 31) -- Joe Scarbrough moved out front on a restart at lap 13 and stormed to his first victory of the year in a 50-lapper for the B&C Seafood Modifieds, the featured event of Saturday evening's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program at Langley Speedway. Looking to climb back into championship contention, Thomas Stinson nabbed the pole, qualifying at 85.359 mph. Robbie Babb was second-fastest, while Scarbrough, Shawn Balluzzo and Rusty Wood completed the top five on the 13-car grid. As the race got rolling, Babb remained on Stinson's flank until they reached Turn 4 on the second lap. Exiting the corner, Stinson gained the upper hand. Caught to the high side, Babb slid back to fifth place as Scarbrough, Wood and Balluzzo freight-trained past. Through the first 12 circuits, the top five parried in nose-to-tail formation. The battle overheated on lap 13 when Wood and Balluzzo tangled off Turn 4, collecting Babb in the process and bringing out the only yellow flag. Lining up for a double-file restart, Stinson and Scarbrough shared Row 1, while Scott Lawrence and Cameron Patrick made up Row 2. Back under green, Scarbrough proved to exceptionally stout in the high lane as he nosed ahead, clearing Stinson as they returned to the flagstand to finish lap 13. Behind them, Patrick surged ahead of Lawrence to pick up third. Balluzzo and Wood, who were first and second in the series standings coming into the night, made pit stops during the caution period and rejoined the field. While Balluzzo was able to advance through the pack, Wood was off the pace, eventually heading to the pits on lap 23. At the crossed flags, Scarbrough enjoyed a three-length lead over Stinson. Patrick was third, followed by Kyle Wood, Lawrence and Balluzzo, who was on the comeback trail. On lap 31, Balluzzo slipped past Lawrence to return to the top five. Back at the front, Scarbrough was driving off into the distance as Patrick closed in to challenge Stinson for second. In the final 10 laps, Patrick got underneath Stinson on two occasions, only to be forced back in line as they overtook slower traffic. At the finish, Scarbrough was the winner by a straightaway over Stinson, who fought off Patrick for second. Balluzzo was fourth, picking off Kyle Wood in the waning laps. Wood was fifth at the checkers. In the series standings, Balluzzo's rebound into the top five allowed him to retain the top spot. Stinson is now second, just eight points back -- 336-328. Rusty Wood, who was 13th in the official finishing order, slipped to third, 22 behind Balluzzo. GRAND STOCK 40 Rodney Boyd started on the pole, at 77.743 mph, and led all the way to bag his first win of the season in the 40-lap Pepsi Grand Stock feature. Robbie Parker shared the front row with Boyd and held down the runner-up spot for the first 33 circuits. Behind Boyd and Parker, Tommy Sweeney, Paul Lubno, Ricky Derrick and Mark Claar jousted for the third position. After 27 green-flag laps to open the race, three yellow flags interrupted the proceedings on laps 28 (twice) and 31. The last of the three cautions caused a bit of a shakeup at the front of the field as Derrick and Claar tangled in Turn 2 and were sent to the back of the pack. On the final restart, Boyd was joined by Parker and Lubno in a three-car breakaway. On lap 34, Lubno slipped underneath Parker on the backstretch in a bid for second. Lubno cleared Parker on the following circuit, but the battle allowed Boyd to pad his lead to four lengths. Pulling away from Parker, Lubno tried to rally in the closing laps, but came up just over a car-length short at the checkers as Boyd motored to the win. Parker was third to the stripe, followed by Sweeney and Carl Livingston. SUPER STREET 40 Aided by a friendly caution flag, Randy Sample rolled to his sixth win of the season in the 40-lap Langley Fan Club Super Street race. Sample qualified on the pole, at 74.349 mph, sharing the front row with Ritchie German, who was only 1-thousandth of a second off Sample's pace. For the first 33 caution-free laps, Sample and German were virtually inseparable as Sample clung to the lead while German pecked at his back bumper. On lap 32, Sample got loose as he passed a slower car off Turn 4. Sensing an opportunity, German took a hard run at the leader into Turn 1 on lap 33. Sample hung onto the lead, but German was far from through. On lap 34, German slipped underneath Sample and pulled out front. At the same time, though, Renno Marchetti IV and Ryan Nester locked horns in Turn 1 to bring out the only caution flag. Scoring reverted to lap 33 and Sample went back to the front. On the ensuing restart, Sample jumped out to a healthy advantage over German and cruised to the win. At the finish, Sample's margin of victory was nearly half a straightaway over German. Kevin Alves, Chris Roberts and John Pereira were third, fourth and fifth, in that order. SUPER TRUCK 25 Robbie Davis moved out front on lap 10 and sailed to his seventh victory in a 25-lapper for the Larry King Legal Services Super Trucks. Davis was the fast qualifier, at 74.657 mph, but had to start on the outside of Row 2 after spinning a "4" on the inversion wheel. Chase McAdams landed on the pole, but gave way to Troy Turnage on the opening lap. Tommy Nixon took over second with a three-wide move past McAdams and Davis on the backstretch. Davis came out of the shuffle in third. On lap 7, Davis scooted past Nixon at the entrance to Turn 1. He closed in on Turnage and dipped under the leader off Turn 4 on lap 9, completing the pass in Turn 1 on lap 10. The only caution flag waved on lap 16. On the restart, Davis, Turnage and Nixon dashed away from the pack. In the waning laps, Davis steadily added to his advantage. By the finish, his winning margin had grown to half a straightaway. Turnage was second, followed by Nixon, who dropped off the leaders' pace near the end. McAdams was fourth and Chris Bechtel rounded out the top five. PRO SIX 15 Warren Smigo capitalized on an inversion at the halfway point and scored his first win in a 15-lapper for the Standard Welding Pro Sixes. Matt Mullins started on the pole, at 80.407 mph, but gave way to Smigo as the event got under way. With Mullins in tow, Smigo showed the way until lap 4 when Lindsay Bryant bypassed both drivers to take the lead. Bryant paced the field to the crossed flags, followed by Mullins, Smigo and series newcomer Anthony Perez. With Perez opting to remain at the rear, Smigo assumed the lead for the restart. Back under green, Smigo quickly opened a three-length advantage over Mullins -- a margin he would maintain for most of the second half. Nearing the finish, Mullins zeroed in on Smigo, cutting his lead to a single car-length. He couldn't overtake the leader down the stretch, however, as Smigo held on for the victory. Bryant tailed Smigo and Mullins to the line, in third, while Perez complete the rundown. ENDURO 50 Mike Ganoe took the lead on lap 22 and steamrolled the field to pick up his first win in a 50-lap Enduro contest. James Loving drew the pole for the start, but gave way to Dale Parro as the race got going. Ganoe started fifth and emerged from the opening shuffle in second. He stalked Parro for the first 21 circuits, then swiped the lead in Turns 3 and 4 on lap 22. By the end of the event, Ganoe's winning margin had swelled to well over a full straightaway. Danny Harrell was the runner-up. Jeff Sweeney and Parro were third and fourth to the line, but failed to pass the post-race inspection. Ricky Stotler was third in the official rundown, followed by Loving and Alex Ayers. MODIFIEDS - 50 laps 1. Joe Scarbrough 2. Thomas Stinson 3. Cameron Patrick 4. Shawn Balluzzo 5. Kyle Wood 6.
